The Nature Management programme is designed to equip students with knowledge of and competence in the application of modern management principles in the field of Nature Management. Students are trained to be knowledgeable, capable managers and management assistants, who will contribute to the economic potential of our country’s natural resources in a responsible, sustainable manner, and to produce well rounded, trained individuals who can make a positive contribution to society. After qualifying, students will be able to independently carry out essential tasks, make decisions and solve problems in the fields of game farm management, reserve management and in the management of natural areas.

Individuals who:

  • feels passionate for South Africa’s incredibly rich natural heritage and wants to pursue a career in which they can contribute to protecting and managing this heritage
  • wants to be involved in managing game ranches and nature reserves
  • are involved in nature conservation and wants to obtain a formal qualification
Admission Requirements

NSC (Gr 12) with entrance to Diploma studies National Certificate (Vocational) with the minimum requirements for entrance to Diploma studies, as specified by UMALUSI with a minimum of 40% in the language of instruction AS WELL AS 40% in Mathematics or 70% in Mathematical Literacy


a minimum of 40% in the following subjects: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences


  • 40% in 2 of the subjects above and 50% in any 1 other subject (excluding Life Orientation),


  • 40% in 1 of the subjects above and 50% in any 2 other subjects (excluding Life Orientation),


  • 50% in any 3 other subjects (excluding Life Orientation),


  • a Higher Certificate in Nature Management (60% average & selection interview),


  • a Higher Certificate in Nature Management PLUS 7 months Experience based learning


  • 16 months of appropriate work experience and a selection interview
Work Integrated Learning (WIL)

Students receive the opportunity throughout the first two years to apply their theoretical knowledge practically. Students attend various camps and excursions where practical assessments are done to ensure students have a thorough understanding of their work. This also gives students the opportunity to build relationships with various role players in the industry. In the third year students spend 10 months on a game ranch or nature reserve of their choice, where they are required to complete various assignments. This forms part of their work-integrated learning.
